The newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Zhang Maoming, arrived in Kathmandu on Friday morning. Upon landing at Tribhuvan International Airport by an Air China flight, he was received by officials from the Chinese Embassy.
Following the expiry of former Ambassador Chen Song's tenure, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China dispatched Zhang to Nepal with his new responsibilities. Immediately after his arrival, he addressed the Nepali people via the social media platform 'X', expressing his commitment to further strengthening Nepal-China relations.
Taking to X, Ambassador Zhang stated, "Namaste! It’s my great honor to be appointed as the 23rd Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Nepal. Since my arrival, I have been warmly welcomed by friendly Nepali people and deeply impressed by the beauty and vitality of Nepal."
Zhang, who previously served as the Deputy Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is considered an experienced diplomat in Nepali affairs. This department oversees relations with South Asia and the broader Asian region. Prior to that, he served as the Chargé d'Affaires to the Czech Republic (2021–2023).
The Chinese government has designated him as an "Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary." This title is typically reserved for senior diplomats assigned to special missions.
As the new ambassador in Kathmandu, Zhang will exercise full diplomatic powers on behalf of Chinese President Xi Jinping. His credentials include full executive power, signatory rights and high strategic profile.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador Zhang said, "I look forward to working with all Nepali friends to further advance bilateral exchanges and practical cooperation and promote the growth of China-Nepal Strategic Partnership of Cooperation Featuring Everlasting Friendship for Development and Prosperity. Long Live Nepal-China Friendship."
