In a historic shift for the nation’s political trajectory, Tarique Rahman is set to be sworn in as the Prime Minister amidst a ceremony organized at the Jatiya Sangsad in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh this afternoon.
Earlier, the new members of the Parliament of Bangladesh were sworn in by the Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Tarique Rahman will then take oath as the prime minister of the country, the first male to hold the top post in decades.
This landmark ceremony follows the 13th Parliamentary Elections held on February 12, where the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a landslide victory.
Bangladesh’s first male PM in over 30 years
Today’s proceedings at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad mark the end of nearly two decades of political exile for the BNP and the formal conclusion of the interim administration led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus. As the first male Prime Minister in over 30 years, Rahman faces the monumental task of navigating a nation still healing from the 2024 student-led uprising and implementing the sweeping reforms demanded by a new generation of voters.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath of office to Prime Minister-elect Tarique Rahman and his initial cabinet. In a departure from tradition, the ceremony is being held at the National Parliament complex’s South Plaza to accommodate a massive guest list of approximately 1,200 attendees.
Who are attending?
This event is likely to witness around 1,200 local and foreign guests in attendance. Among those confirmed are Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, Speaker of Lok Sabha Om Birla and Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal. The foreign minister of the interim government of Nepal, Bala Nanda Sharma, and Sri Lanka’s health minister, Nalinda Jayatissa, are also expected to attend the event.
