Today marks the voting day for the House of Representatives (HoR) election, which is being conducted following the Gen-Z movement.
Voting will take place in all 77 districts nationwide in a single phase from 7 AM to 5 PM. This is the third House of Representatives election since the nation transitioned to a federal democratic republic, with previous elections occurring in 2074 and 2079 BS. The election today will cover 165 constituencies using the 'first-past-the-post electoral system' (direct) and 110 seats through the proportional representation system.
In the FPTP election system, 65 political parties are vying for 61 election symbols. A total of 3,017 male, 388 female, and 1 other —3,406 candidates—are competing in the direct elections. For the proportional representation system, there are 1,363 male and 1,772 female candidates, totaling 3,135 individuals in the race. This election features 9,663,358 male voters, 9,240,131 female voters, and 200 others, culminating in a total of 18,903,689 voters. Additionally, there are 186,142 temporary voters. To facilitate the elections, 23,112 polling centres have been set up across 10,967 voting locations throughout the country.
Furthermore, 143 temporary voting sites have been established. The Election Commission has announced that measures have been implemented to prioritize senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women to ensure easier access to voting.
In preparation for the upcoming elections, a significant security force has been mobilized, comprising 79,727 personnel from the Nepali Army, 75,797 personnel from the Nepal Police, 34,567 members of the Armed Police Force, 1,921 personnel from the National Investigation Department, and 149,090 Election Police officers. In total, 215,000 staff members are being deployed to ensure a smooth electoral process. The Election Commission has printed 42,251,200 ballots for both the First Past the Post (FPP) and proportional representation systems, which have been distributed to the designated polling centers.
Four international and 39 national organizations are overseeing the election monitoring efforts. Key political figures, including President Ram Chandra Paudel, Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Sushila Karki, and officiating Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, have all engaged in the electoral process, urging citizens to exercise their right to vote.
