Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has not only preserved its legacy, but also set a new record for vote margin in Rolpa, the heartland of a ten-year armed insurgency. Amidst the new balance of power and changing political equations, Rolpa has once again endorsed leader Barshaman Pun, who has a Maoist background.
Influential NCP leader Barshaman Pun has been elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Rolpa with a huge margin. According to the final results of the Election Commission, Pun defeated his nearest rival Sudan Kumar Wali of Nepali Congress by a wide margin of 15,452 votes.
While Pun received a total of 27,460 votes, NC's Wali had to satisfy with 12,08 votes. Similarly, CPN-UML candidate Balaram Thapa has slipped to third place with 10,894 votes.
With this victory, Pun has become the only leader in NCP to win by the largest margin. Pun has further strengthened the legacy of the previous election by maintaining his grip on the geography and psychology of Rolpa. He was elected from the same constituency in the 2079 election as well.
Pun's record victory, which is considered decisive in the power equation and the power struggle within the party, is seen as meaningful in political circles. Pun has secured NCP's stronghold (red fort) in Rolpa by a large margin, beating both his former ally UML and his main rival Congress.
