A second US Air Force combat aircraft went down in the Middle East on Friday, a US official confirmed, marking a significant escalation in a day of heavy military losses and regional instability.

The incident follows the confirmed downing of a US fighter jet over Iranian territory earlier that same day. While one crew member from the first jet has been rescued, the status of the personnel aboard the second aircraft remains unknown.

Developing situation
Details surrounding the second crash remain thin as the Pentagon maintains a tight lid on sensitive military operations. The exact crash site has not been disclosed. Officials have not yet determined if the aircraft suffered a mechanical failure or was intercepted by hostile fire.  No information has been released regarding the fate of the crew.

The chaos of the day’s aerial losses has already resulted in civilian casualties. In Abu Dhabi, local authorities reported that one person was killed after being struck by falling debris. The debris is believed to have originated from the military engagements taking place in the region, sparking fires across the city.

The Iranian connection
The Pentagon is currently investigating whether Iranian forces were involved in the second incident. This comes on the heels of a confirmed shoot-down earlier Friday, where a US fighter jet was lost within Iranian borders.

"We are operating in a highly sensitive military environment," said a US official speaking on the condition of anonymity. "Our primary focus is the recovery of our personnel and determining the exact nature of these losses."

The New York Times was the first to report the second downed aircraft, a report that was later corroborated by military sources. As of Friday evening, the US Air Force has not issued a formal statement regarding the specific type of aircraft involved or the mission parameters at the time of the incidents.
