The election for the chairpersons of various thematic committees under the House of Representatives is scheduled to take place on April 17. Often referred to as "mini-parliaments," these committees play a crucial role in the legislative process.
According to the Federal Parliament Secretariat, the nomination process begins Thursday. Candidates must be proposed and seconded by members of their respective committees between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. A final list of candidates will be published later in afternoon at 4:30 pm.
The formal election will occur during committee meetings on Friday at 1:00 pm. During these sessions, proponents will introduce their candidates, supporters will second them, and the proposals will be put forward for a final decision.
To ensure a smooth process, the Secretariat has requested that ministers—who serve as ex-officio members on multiple committees—provide 24-hour written notice specifying which committee they intend to vote in if a contest arises.
The House of Representatives features 10 thematic committees, including Finance, Public Accounts, and International Relations. Additionally, there are two joint committees: the Parliamentary Hearing Committee and the Committee on State Directive Principles.
