Twelve committees of the federal parliament have received chairpersons. Chairpersons of 10 of the House of Representatives and two joint committees of both houses were elected on Friday.
Chairpersons have been elected unopposed for nine of the House of Representatives and one joint committee. Chairpersons for one and another joint committee were elected through voting.
Apart from Public Accounts, chairperson of nine thematic committees were elected representing Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Dr Krishna Hari Budhathoki was elected as the chairperson of the Finance Committee from RSP, Sumnima Udas (International Relations and Tourism Committee), Rahbar Ansari (Industry and Commerce and Labor and Consumer Welfare Committee) and Samiksha Baskota as the chairperson of the Law and Justice and Human Rights Committee.
Similarly, Hari Dhakal was elected as the chairperson of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives, Aakriti Awasthi (Women and Social Affairs Committee), Ashish Gajurel (Infrastructure Development Committee) and Ashok Kumar Chaudhary was elected as the chairperson of the Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee.
While Bharat Bahadur Khadka of Nepali Congress was elected unopposed as the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Bodh Narayan Shrestha was elected unopposed as the chairperson of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee from RSP. This is a joint committee of both houses.
Elections were held for the Education, Health and Information Technology Committee, alongside the State Directive Principles, Policies and Obligation Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Committee.
Ojaswi Sherchan of RSP has been elected as the chairperson of the Education Committee. Guru Prasad Baral of CPN (UML) had also filed his candidacy for the chairmanship of this Committee.
Similarly, RSP's Ganesh Karki was elected as the chairperson of the State Directive Principles, Policies and Obligations Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Committee. Madan Kumari Shah (Garima) of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) had filed her candidacy for this Committee. RSP has a majority of MPs in both committees.
