Nepali Congress has called on the government to halt the use of force against squatters, advocating instead for a long-term, humane solution. During a Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Friday, the party emphasized that the issue is a national challenge that must be addressed through the rule of law rather than administrative coercion.
In a statement, party spokesperson Devraj Chalise urged the government to follow court orders and previous parliamentary guidelines. The party argued that the first step must be the clear identification of genuine squatters to distinguish them from those taking unfair advantage of the situation.
"Providing land and housing to genuine squatters is not just a policy obligation; it is a constitutional duty linked to the protection of landless squatters."
NC criticized the current use of force as an "immature and unwise style of governance," stating that the state must fulfill its responsibility to the landless before clearing settlements.
