The government has formed a task force to resolve problems that have been seen recently in tea exports from Nepal to India.
The task force has been formed to study the problems in tea exports and submit a report with immediate, medium and long-term recommendations in the next two weeks, shared Prime Minister Balendra Shah's press and research expert Deepa Dahal.
The task force has been formed under the coordination of Joint Secretary of the Bilateral and Regional Trade Division under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.
The members of the task force include the Under Secretaries at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Environment, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Customs, the Director of the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control, the Director of the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, the Director of the National Tea and Coffee Development Board, the Under Secretary of the Bilateral Trade and Transit Unit, and the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, Commerce and Supplies as Member Secretary.
It may be noted that tea exports from Nepal to India have stalled after the Tea Board of India made it mandatory to conduct quality testing of every consignment of tea imported into India.
The provision has led to difficulties for small and medium-scale Nepali tea farmers and exporters, while severely impacting the export of tea from Nepal to India.
