Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has announced that former Vice President Gopal Man Shrestha has been made a senior leader.
President Thapa announced this decision at a function organized at City Hall in Kathmandu on Thursday on the 44th memorial day of BP Koirala.
Thapa said that the decision will be approved by the party's upcoming Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting. Shrestha is undergoing treatment in the hospital due to a serious illness.
"Gopal Man Shrestha's health is critical. The CWC meeting will be held on July 28–29. The meeting will endorse the decision to designate Shrestha as the senior leader of the party," Thapa said.
President Thapa said that Shrestha was made a senior leader in recognition of his contributions in various roles, including acting president and vice president.
Shrestha, who is suffering from cancer, has been undergoing treatment in the ICU at Helios Hospital in Jawalakhel for the past 10 days.
