Speaker election in Karnali Province today

The election of the speaker of Karnali Province is underway.

Parliamentarian duo Nanda Gurung from CPN-UML and Khadga Pokharel have registered their candidature for the position on Saturday.

The election is said to have started at 11 this afternoon.

Congress Candidate Pokharel is the MP, directly elected from Surkhet, constituenycy 1 whereas UML Candidate Gurung is the MP, elected from proprotional representation system from Surkhet.

In the 40-member Provincial Assmebly, 14 MPs are from Nepali Congress, 10 from CPN-UML, 1 each from Rastriya Prajatantra Party and CPN-Unified Socialist, and 1 independent candidate.

The winning candidate must garner atleast 21 votes. However, coalition candidate has support of 13 MPs from CPN-Maoist Center and 10 from CPN-UML.
