Rabi Lamichhane, who was declared a stateless by the Supreme Court on January 27, has regained his citizenship certificate of Nepal.
Lamichhane, who had renounced a citizenship certificate of Nepal issued by the District Administration Office in 2050 BS, had become an American citizen. He had received an American citizenship in 2070 BS.
Even though he returned to Nepal in 2075 BS by renouncing the American citizenship certificate, he had not submitted a proof of its renouncement to the concered DAO.
He had taken the passport based on the citizenship card of Nepal issued in 2050 BS which had already turned invalid.
So much so that he used the same invalid citizenship card while registering the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) at the Election Commission Nepal.
Likewise, it is also revealed that Lamichhane used the same citizenship card when he filed his nomination for the elections to House of Representatives from Chitwan-2.
Lamichhane reached Kathmandu the District Administration Office (DAO), Babarmahal today and applied for the citizenship certificate.
The DAO validated his old Nepali citizenship certificate based on the proof that he relinquished his American citizenship, said Prakash Sigdel, his personal aide.
Even though Lamichhane regained his status of a Nepali citizen, there is still a possibility that the state might investigate him over his dual use of passports and the misuse of invalid citizenship card for attaining the constitutional post.
