Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and chairman of CPN (UML) KP Sharma Oli are holding a meeting at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar.
The leaders of the ruling alliance are holding discussions towards looking for a new home minister, with the resignation by outgoing Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane.
The Supreme Court on Friday issued a verdict declaring Lamichhane a non-citizen on the ground of not acquiring the valid citizenship certificate.
With the SC verdict, Lamichhane tendered his resignation as the Deputy Prime Minister and the Home Minister.
Lamichhane, during the power sharing among the ruling coalition partners on December 25, had taken the stance that the RSP would not join the government unless the portfolio of the Home Ministry were given to it.
The outgoing home minister regained his citizenship today after he submitted a proof to the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, that he renounced his American citizenship.
Despite losing the post as the parliamentary party leader of the RSP, there is still a constitutional provision that Lamichhane can be appointed as the Home Minister for six months. But within six months, he has to be elected as the member of the House of Representatives.
Prime Minister wants to keep the ministerial portfolio with himself while Oli is taking the stand that it should be given back to the RSP itself as per the deal, sources have said.
The RSP has also been maintaining that it should retain the post of the Home Minister. Currently, Prime Minister Dahal is looking after this portfolio.
Against this backdrop, the heavyweights are holding a meeting at Baluwatar to resolve this issue surrounding the Home Ministry this evening.
