Chelsea has made a proposal of 120 million euros (£105.6 million) for Benfica's Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez, which would make him the most expensive signing in British transfer history.
No indication has been given as of yet as to whether the Blues' offer, which is rumored to involve installments, will be accepted.
But if the deal goes through, it would eclipse the £100m Manchester City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021.
During Argentina's World Cup victory in Qatar, Fernandez was voted the competition's young player of the year.
Previously, Roger Schmidt, the manager of the Portuguese team Benfica, said that Chelsea was attempting to upset the player.
But it's unlikely that the Premier League team would have submitted a new offer if there had been no hint that it may be approved.
In only 29 appearances for the Primeira Liga team since his August transfer from Argentinian club River Plate to Benfica, which cost a reputed £10 million, Fernandez has netted four goals.
He had one goal during the World Cup, which came in Argentina's 2-0 victory over Mexico in the group stage.
Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, and Malo Gusto were all acquired by Chelsea in January on permanent contracts. Joao Felix was also acquired by Chelsea on loan from Atletico Madrid.
It follows a summer in which they broke Premier League spending records, spending a total of £270 million, second only to Real Madrid's £292 million summer spending in 2019.
