Home Minister of Malaysia Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has urged the Nepal government to renew the labor agreement to facilitate the recruitment of domestic Nepali workers in Malaysia.
In a bilateral meeting with Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security Dol Prasad Aryal held at Soaltee Hotel, Home Minister Saifuddin put forth this proposal.
In response, the Nepali side said that it will raise it as an agenda in the joint technical meeting between Nepal and Malaysia to be held in the next three months.
“We have decided to raise the Malaysia’s proposal to take domestic workers in the joint technical meeting,” said Kabiraj Upreti, the deputy spokesperson at the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security.
Malaysia has officially informed Nepal that it has introduced a ‘Foreign Worker Employment Relaxation Plan’ to recruit 500,000 migrant workers.
“We are recruiting 500,000 foreign workers,” Upreti quoted Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin as saying.
However, the Malaysian side did not make it clear regarding the number of migrant workers it will take from Nepal.
In the bilateral meeting, Labor Minister Aryal assured the Malaysian side that it will help in the effective implementation of the labor agreement signed between Nepal and Malaysia.
“The agreement signed between the two countries that allows Nepali workers to go to Malaysia on a zero investment must be implemented in a letter and spirit. We are hopeful that the Malaysia government will cooperate in this regard,” said Minister Aryal.
The meeting also discussed including Nepali migrant workers in Malaysia in the Social Security Scheme apart from the current status of Nepali security guards.
Home Minister of Malaysia is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' at 4 pm today.
Home Minister Saifuddin is scheduled to return home on Saturday.
