Veep candidate should be different from President in gender and community: EC

The Election Commission (EC) has directed to register the nomination paper of the candidates of different gender and community than that of the President for the upcoming Vice-President election.

The election for Vice-President is on March 17 for which nomination paper is to be registered on March 11.

In the instruction given to the Election Officer, the Commission mentioned that Ram Chandra Paudel was elected to the post of President in the cluster of Khas Arya.

Hence, to go by the spirit of inclusiveness, the Vice-President candidate should be from different gender and ethnic community, reads the press statement issued by the Commission's Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudyal.

According to the President and Vice-President Election Act- 2074 BS, Vice-President candidate must be from different gender and community than that of the President. In the present case, the Vice-President should be from Dalit, indigenous, Madheshi, Tharu and Muslim.
