A music video titled 'Sakambari' by Prakash Saput has been the talk of the town. Critics are divided over the contents of the music video. A section of critics says (that) it depicts the reality of society while the other side argues that it blatantly attacks women’s dignity.
As the story in the music video unfolds, Phulmaya, a teenage girl from a village, arrives in a city with a dream of earning a name and fame. Her relative, a cousin by relation, brings her to the city promising her a job.
At first, the cousin who promises to get her a job, touches her body with wrong intentions when they travel in a microbus.
Phulmaya gets a job, nice food, fancy clothes, and ornaments after starting the job.
In return, she is used as an object by one man after another in the city. Gradually, she gets accustomed to the city life. And one day, she becomes ‘Sakambari’ which the society that once used her starts hating her.
A section of the society is accusing Saput of portraying Phulmaya as one who is compelled to sell her body to start her career in the art field.
How does Kushum Sharma, who performs the role of Phulmaya alias “Sakambari’ react about it?
She says, “This music video, I think, has won the hearts of many people and sent positive messages.”
Expressing her views, Kusum further says, “The truth tests always bitter. Presenting the reality will ensure your freedom and victory.”
Sakambari is an imaginary character which does not indicate or refer to any individual.
She writes, "The author has only tried to shed light on some of the dark realities of the present society, which we all rightly accept."
The criticism is an essential part to any successful work, writes Kusum, adding, "That is why we welcome it, but please keep your mind open to the reality and spread love, not hatred towards it."
