Rato Machchhindranath Jatra started at Patan in Lalitpur on Friday evening.
This starts from Shukla Pratipada of the month Baisakh and will run until Sukla Chauthi of the month Ashadh.
A special chariot is made out of bamboo and wood and an idol of the god is placed inside the chariot.
Rato Machchhindranath, which is an incarnation of Lord Shiva, is worshipped as the god of rain as well as the sign of fortune.
The 60-feet long chariot is pulled by enthusiastic devotees from Pulchowk to different places of Lalitpur including Gabahal, Mangal Bazaar, Sundhara, Lagankhel, Iti Tole before reaching Jawalakhel where god's bejeweled vest is displayed and the festival ends.
This is the longest-running jatra of the Kathmandu Valley.
