CPN (UML) is making preparations to remove the age limit of 70 years for the leaders, which was set 10 years ago.

The 70-year-age limit for the leaders was set by the Ninth General Convention of the UML held in Kathmandu.

In the 10th General Convention also, the leaders contested the elections according to this provision.

The secretariat meeting held on June 2 passed a resolution on removing the age limit. A senior UML leader said that they are going to amend the current system by holding a statute convention.

"It has been decided to take the proposal to the statute convention to remove the age limit of 70 years," a UML office-bearer told Nepalkhabar.

Once it is endorsed by the statute convention, it will pave the way for Chairman KP Sharma Oli to become the Chairman yet again.

During the extensive reshuffling of the in-charges of the municipalities, districts and provinces, Oli has selected his henchmen.

In the 10th General Convention  held in Chitwan from November 27 to December 4, 2021, Oli was able to contest the election only because he was 70 years old. He is now 72 years old.

Now, by amending the statute of the party, he is going to become the chairman again.

The intra-party directive, which is issued to send the decisions made at the Central Committee meeting and the Secretariat meeting to the lower level, mentions the provision to remove the age limit.

UML had started keeping the age limit of 70 years from the Ninth National Convention.

In the CC meeting held on May 11 and 12, Oli suggested that the existing arrangement should be amended arguing that leaders over 70 years of age from other parties can take part in politics.

Similarly, leaders Mukunda Neupane and Prem Bahadur Singh joined the UML from the CPN (Unified Socialist) who have crossed 70 years of age.

If the law is not amended, some office-bearers including Oli will not be able to contest the Central Committee election in 2083 BS.

That is why Oli is going to remove the age limit by amending the law to become chairman again.

UML has been holding a statute convention to amend some provisions in the party statute.

A statute convention is held before the national convention. But at sometimes, a decision can be taken to remove the unfavorable provisions by holding a special statute convention.
