The Supreme Court (SC) of Nepal has issued an interim order staying the decision of the Media Hub Pvt. Ltd. to charge additional fee of Rs 500 to spectators of the World Cup.
Hearing the writ filed against the Media Hub, a single bench of Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut issued the order not to implement the decision to collect an additional fee of Rs 500 immediately.
Meanwhile, on November 13, both the complainant and defendant have been called to the court to discuss the issue.
It has also given a show cause order to Media Hub Pvt Ltd, which holds the broadcasting license, for taking the additional fee.
Advocates Anupam Bhattarai, Kishor Paudel among others filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding a stay on the decision to charge additional fees to the subscribers.
Media Hub Pvt. Ltd. has taken the broadcasting license of the World Cup, which will begin in the third week of November.
The company has acquired the necessary broadcasting rights from Viacom 18 Media Pvt Ltd for the purpose of broadcasting FIFA World Cup 2022 in Nepal. Media Hub says that they have taken exclusive rights to be territory locked.
The company claims that the cost is more now than in the past arguing that the broadcasting rights before and now are different.
According to the FIFA policy, the Media Hub has claimed to have spent around Rs. 400 million in Nepal.
That's why media hub has been saying that they have to collect money from consumers. Accordingly, Media Hub wanted to collect additional money at the rate of Rs. 500 per set-top box.
