Smuggled gold weighs 60 kg excluding brake shoes

To be tested Tuesday after melting

The quality of the illegal gold seized by the Department Revenue Investigation (DRI) from outside the Tribhuvan International Airport on July 19 will be tested on Tuesday.

Around 100 kg of gold seized by the DRI is being checked at the Mint Division of Nepal Rastra Bank at Babarmahal, currently.

According to the Mint Division, the gold was taken out from the disc brake pads, brake shoes and was weighed separately.

The gold now weighs 60 kg 789 grams excluding the brake shoes, Division Chief Thaneshwar Acharya. The actual weight of the gold will come out only after testing its quality, said Acharya.

Cartons containing gold was taken out in the presence of representatives of the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI), Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and Nepal Rastra Bank.

Acharya has said that after all the gold is extracted, the melting work will start from this evening.

According to him, the amount of recovered gold including brake shoes was 155 kg and it was kept sealed at the Mint Division.  

Acharya further said when one of the cartons was opened, less amount of gold was found than what was estimated.
