The Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) has endorsed Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha as a new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal.
A meeting of the PHC held at the office of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee in Singha Dubar endorsed Shrestha as the new Chief Justice unanimoulsy on Monday.
Earlier, there was a hearing on the complaints filed against Shrestha. Three complaints had been lodged against Shrestha. Lawmakers had inquired Shrestha about the complaints lodged by the complainants. During a discussion with the lawmakers, proposed Shrestha had expressed his commitment that to establish a family court.
Shrestha will take charge of the ofice after being administered oath of office and secrecy by the President as per the constitutional provision.
The post had been lying vacant after former Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki retired on August 5 on the ground of age limit.
A meeting of the Constitutional Council on August 3 had recommended Senior Justice Shrestha of the Supreme Court for the appointment of the Chief Justice.
On August 8, a meeting of the PHC had called for complaints against Shrestha within 10 days.
Originally from Dhangadhi, Kailali, Shrestha had joined the judicial service on temporary appointment 41 years ago. He was appointed as chief judge of Darchula district on May 16, 1988.
