Bhaktapur, which holds unique identity when it comes to cultures, is observing Gaijatra festival with much fanfare.

Locals have taken out a chariot (known as Taha-Macha) made of bamboo wrapped in cloth with the photo of a deceased hung at the center around Bhaktapur Durbar Square from Taleju.

Kids, disguised as Radha-Krishna, Shiva-Parwati and cows, are taken around the city by chanting hymns in memory of those who passed away this year, according to the tradition.

Similarly, locals provided fruits, selroti, dakshina (money), to those who visited the houses in the city.

Newari people, who have been observing Gaijatra as a special festival, pray for the salvation of the departed souls.
