Earthquake kills at least 121 in Jajarkot and Rukum West

At least 121 people have been killed in Jajarkot and Rukum West after a devastating earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck with its epicenter at Ramidanda in Jajarkot at 11:47 pm on Friday. 

As many as 35 people have died in Bheri Municipality of Jajarkot alone. According to Chandra Prakash Gharti, Mayor of the Bheri Municipality, there are 30 dead bodies in the health post and five dead bodies have been kept in Rimna.

Ward number 1 and 3 have suffered the most. Gharti said that there was a problem in rescuing the injured due to the blocked roads including the Bheri corridor.

According to the preliminary information, more than 100 people may have lost their lives in Bheri Municipality alone, said Mayor Gharti. Most of the physical structures in the city have been damaged.

Similarly, more than 50 people, including deputy mayor Sarita Singh, lost their lives in the earthquake in Nalgad Municipality of Jajarkot.

According to Nalgad Municipal Chief Dambar Bahadur Rawat, more than 50 people have lost their lives so far. Ward number 1 has suffered the most.

He said that the roads are blocked in some places and the telephones are not working, so it was difficult to rescue and there is a problem in collecting the exact details of the incident.

More than 85 people sustained injuries in Rukum West. Aathbiskot Municipality, Chaurjahari Municipality and Sanibheri Rural Municipality of Rukum West have been badly hit by the earthquake. Houses and sheds have been destroyed by the earthquake and roads have also been blocked.
