The Election Commission is publishing the name list of candidates today (Thursday) after examining the complaints lodged against them.

The EC had set January 8 for the candidates to file nominations, and called for objections and complaints if any, against the candidates on Tuesday (January 9).

The EC has received two complaints lodged against candidacies. According to Shaligram Paudel, the spokesperson of the EC, complaints were registered against Narayan Dutta Bhatta, a candidate from the person with disabilities category representing the Nepali Congress from Sudurpaschim Province, and Bishnu BK, a candidate from the Dalit category representing CPN (Maoist Center) from Karnali Province.

Ramchandra Joshi of CPN (UML) filed a complaint against Bhatta stating that the latter lacked evidence to prove his physical disability while Hikmat BK of CPN (UML) registered the complaint against candidate BK that his name was in the closed-list of the House of Representatives members' election.

As many as 52 candidates have filed their nominations for 19 vacant posts in the National Assembly elections to be held on January 25.

Candidates who want to withdraw their candidacies can do so on January 12 and the final list of candidates will be published on the same day.

After publishing the final list of candidates, the EC will provide an election symbol to the candidates on January 13.

The National Assembly election is scheduled to be held on January 25 (from 9 am to 3 pm). There are 2 thousand 47 voters for the National Assembly election.

The term of office of 20 MPs of the National Assembly is expiring on March 3. Of them, 19 members will be elected through elections while the remaining one will be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the government.

A constitutional provision has it that the elections must be held one month before the expiry of the term of office of the members of the National Assembly.
