A curfew has been clamped in Birgunj Metropolitan City for an indefinite period effective from 5 pm today after a religious tension flared up in the Parsa district.
"A curfew has been imposed in Birgunj Metropolitan City since 5 pm today due to a religious tension," reads the notice issued by the District Police Office, Parsa.
A dispute broke out between two religious groups - - Hindu and Muslim communities – in course of immersing an idol of Goddess of Saraswati in Motirampur in Ishnath Municipality of Rautahat.
Clashes broke out in two different places in Birgunj on Sunday.
The curfew has been imposed after the tension flared up due to clashes between Muslim and Hindu communities, said Chief District Officer of Parsa District Dinesh Sagar Bhusal.
The curfew will be effective in the area stretching to Nagawa Chowk in the east, Tilawa Bridge in the west, Parwanipur in the north, and Bhansar Miteri Bridge in the South, said CDO Bhusal.
