The population of Nepal will double in the next 75 years if it increases at the current growth rate.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) has made this projection based on the 2021 census report of Nepal.

The current population of Nepal is 29,164,578 as of 2021 census report.

Between 1911 and 2021, the number of population has increased fivefold, according to the 2021 census.

The annual average population growth rate for the census period is 0.92 percent. It was 1.35 percent in June 2011.

The NSO said, "As per the current growth pace, it will take 75 years for the population to double." In the year 1911, the population density of Nepal was 38 people per square km, and in 2021 it has increased to 198 people.

According to geographical area, Terai has the highest number of 460 people and the Himalayan region has the lowest number of 34 people and the hilly region has 192 people per square km. Madhes Province has 633 people and Bagmati Province has 301 people per square km.

Kathmandu district has the highest population density with 5,169 people in the country, followed by Bhaktapur with 3,631 people and Lalitpur with 1,433 people. The districts with the lowest population density in Nepal include Manang (3 people), Mustang (4 people) and Dolpa (5 people).

According to the NSO, Terai's population was 38 percent of Nepal's total population in 1982. It has increased to about 54 percent in 2021.

The mountain region had 9.9 percent of the total population during the same period, which decreased to 6.1 percent in 2021, while the population also decreased in the hills during this period.

In the case of provinces, Madhes and Bagmati have the highest population of about 21 percent, while Karnali has the lowest population of 5.79 percent. During the last 10 years, Lumbini has the highest population growth of 13.8 percent and Gandaki the lowest population growth of 2.6 percent.

According to the population growth rate of the last decade, the annual population growth rate is more than 1 percent in Lumbini (1.24 percent) and Madhes (1.2 percent), while the lowest is 0.25 percent in Gandaki.

Nepal's recent census data shows varying growth rates across provinces. Lumbini and Madhes provinces have the fastest growth, exceeding 1% annually, 1.24% and 1.2%, respectively). In contrast, Gandaki Province has the slowest growth rate at 0.25% per year.

Nepal's recent census data reveals a trend of population decline in most mountainous and hilly districts. Out of the 34 districts in these regions, the annual population growth rate is negative for the majority. Conversely, all districts in the Terai region show positive population growth.

The National Census 2021 showed that almost two-thirds (66 percent) of the population lived in municipalities.

Looking at the district level population distribution, the highest population is 7 percent in Kathmandu and the lowest is 0.01 percent in Manang, i.e. 5 thousand 658. The highest negative annual growth rate is in Ramechhap (-1.67 percent).
