CPN (UML) Parliamentary Party (PP) leader Yamlal Kandel has become the Chief Minister of Karnali Province.

Karnali Province Chief Tilak Pariyar appointed Kandel as the Chief Minister of the province on Tuesday evening.

Kandel had staked a claim with the support of 23 lawmakers including 10 from UML, 13 from the CPN (Maoist Center) and one from CPN (Unified Socialist) earlier in the day today.

Pariyar had called on the parties to submit a claim for the post of Chief Minister by 5:30 pm today. In the 40-member Karnali Province Assembly, 21 lawmakers are required to form the government. Kandel garners support of 23 lawmakers excluding the Speaker.

However, Maoist Center has stated that it would not join the government unless it receives four ministries.

It has demanded the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Planning, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development, the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment and the Ministry of Social Development.

Outgoing Chief Minister Raj Kumar Sharma on April 3 resigned from the post paving the way for Kandel to become the new Chief Minister of the province.

Sharma had resigned from his post after Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali went into the fold of UML following the power-sharing deal sealed among the four coalition parties.
