CPN (UML) and CPN (Maoist Center) are staking a claim for the post of a new government in Koshi Province today.
Province Chief Parshuram Khapung on Wednesday evening called on the political parties to stake a claim for the formation of a new government in accordance with Article 168 (5) of the Constitution of Nepal.
The UML-Maoist Center is submitting the claim to form a new government today, informed chief whip of the UML Province Parliamentary Party, Rewati Raman Bhandari.
UML is fielding Hikmat Karki as the new Chief Minister in Koshi Province yet again. Karki has already served as the Chief Minister of Koshi Province for two terms.
“We are fielding Karki as the new Chief Minister again, “We are staking a claim for the post today. The oath-taking ceremony will also be held today itself,” claimed Bhandari.
In the 93-member Koshi Province Assembly, there are 52 lawmakers including 39 from UML and 13 from Maoist Center.
Meanwhile, Kedar Karki who is relieved of his post as the Chief Minister is filing a writ petition at the Supreme Court today claiming that Province Chief’s call for the for formation of the new government is unconstitutional.
On October 14, 2023, lawmaker of Nepali Congress Kedar Karki became the Chief Minister with the support of CPN (UML). Karki also manged to receive the vote of confidence from CPN (Maoist Center), eventually.
On April 8, 52 lawmakers withdrew their support to Chief Minister Karki following the formation of the new ruling alliance including UML in the center on March 4.
A meeting of the province assembly on April 22 passed a resolution motion by a majority of lawmakers to end the existing stalemate in the province. After Chief Minister Karki did not register any proposal for taking the vote of confidence, Province Chief Khapung called for the formation of a new government.
Earlier, leaders of UML and Maoist Center had urged the Province Chief to take steps toward forming the new government.
Accordingly, Khapung called for the formation a new government in accordance with Article 168 (5) of the Constitution of Nepal following the consultation with Attorney General Dr Dinmani Pokharel.
