Photojournalists take photos as police officials arrest Kailash Sirohiya, the chairman of Kantipur Media Group, from Thapathali-based office on Tuesday.

Kailash Sirohiya, the chairman of Kantipur Media Group, has been arrested from Thapathali, Kathmandu on Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrested Media Mogul Sirohiya from the office of Kantipur Publications in line with the arrest warrant issued by the Dhanusha District Court.

Sirohiya, while being arrested, expressed his belief that the arrest warrant would be issued even against Home Minister Lamichhane who holds two passports.

Similarly, reacting to Sirohiya’s arrest, senior journalist and editor of Deshsanchar, Yubaraj Ghimire, said that this is a blatant attack on the press freedom and termed it a premeditated act on the part of the government.

Earlier in the day today, Dhanusha District Court Judge Chitra Bahadur Gurung issued an arrest warrant against Sirohiya in the citizenship fraud case. Following the arrest warrant, Sirohiya has lodged a petition at the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday itself demanding to vacate the order of the Dhanusha District Court.

Information Officer of SC Govinda Prasad Ghimire said that the decision will be taken on Wednesday whether or not to register the writ petition.

The District Police Office, Dhanusha, sought approval from the court to arrest Sirohiya after the citizenship number of Sirohiya and another person was found to be the same.

In the last week of April, a complaint had been lodged at the District Court Dhanusha alleging that Sirohiya holds two citizenship cards.

Sirohiya, however, denies allegations of citizenship fraud, claiming his documents are authentic and accusations stem from personal animosities.

Sirohiya, earlier, had moved the court to issue a show cause notice to the Home Ministry and the Police seeking reasons for investigating his citizenship.
