Senior leader Jhala Nath Khanal has decided to lend his support to Ghnashyam Bhusal to become the chairman of CPN (Unified Socialist).
The consensus was reached during a meeting held at the residence of Khanal in Dallu, Kathmandu.
Khanal, Bhusal, chairman of Youth Association of Nepal Naresh Kumar Shahi, who is also a central party member, were present in the meeting.
There have been several rounds of meetings at various stages to garner support for Bhusal who has been advocating for the transfer of power in the party.
Earlier, Khanal was saying that he would field himself for the post of chairman of the party. With the agreement reached today, he has now backed off from his claim for the top post.
The meeting which started at 11 am lasted for around three hours, the sources have said.
Bhusal is the incumbent General Secretary of the party.
On the other hand, incumbent Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal has shown his willingness to repeat for one more time. If Nepal does not back down from his stance and no consensus is reached, the election is likely between Bhusal and Nepal.
“How to lead the socialist movement is today’s main question,” said a leader privy to the meeting, “The transfer of power to the second-rung leader is a must to achieve this goal. Comrade Nepal may agree to it.”
The Unified Socialist is holding party’s First General Convention on June 30 after it broke away from its mother party CPN (UML).
