India wins ICC World Cup title

India lifted the trophy of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa by 7 runs in the final match held in West Indies on Saturday night.

India won the World Cup for the second time after defeating South Africa in the final. When South Africa, which reached the final for the first time, lost to India, the unbeaten journey of the ninth edition of the World Cup came to an end.

India restricted South Africa while the latter was chasing the 177-run target in the final match. 

To restrict the opponent from reaching the target, Hardik Pandya claimed the highest three wickets giving away 20 runs while Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each. Similarly, Axar Patel grabbed one wicket for India.

Despite Heinrich Klaasen's a half-century score of 52 runs, South Africa could not meet the target. He hit two fours and five sixes off 27 balls. Captain Quinton de Kock made 39 runs including four fours and one six off 31 deliveries while Tristan Stubbs and David Miller contributed 31 and 21 runs, respectively.

Earlier, electing to bat first after winning the toss, India notched up 176 runs losing seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Virat Kohli topped the score with six fours and two sixes off 59 balls followed by Axar Patel with 47 runs. Patel hit one four and four sixes of 31 deliveries.

Similarly, Shivam Dube contributed 27 runs including three fours and one six off 16 balls. The other batsmen could not achieve double-digit runs.

In reply, Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje took two wickets each while Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada claimed one wicket each for South Africa.
