Today is Vijaya Dashami, the main day of Bada Dashain. Nepali people, especially those from the Hindu community, celebrate the festival by receiving tika and blessings from their seniors, as the offerings of goddess Durga Bhawani.
The Nepal Calendar Determination Development Committee has determined 11:36 am as the auspicious time for receiving tika.
However, since the day of Vijaya Dashami is itself considered auspicious, the whole day is regarded as auspicious for receiving tika, according to Professor Shri Krishna Adhikari, the chairman of the Committee.
Today, people go to the houses of their seniors and receive tika, jamara, and blessings from them.
According to Professor Dr. Devmani Bhattarai, a member of the Committee, the person who offers tika should sit facing west while the receivers should face east.
The tika can be received until Kojagrat Purnima starting today, as per the tradition.
A religious belief has it that, on this day in Treta Yuga, Lord Ram defeated Ravan, a symbol of evil and injustice. Hence, followers started celebrating Vijaya Dashami to commemorate the triumph of good over evil and righteousness over injustice.
