The fate of the ordinance to split political parties Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was trying to bring has been on hold yet again.
The ordinance has been on hold after Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba showed reluctance to give consent to it.
According to a highly placed source, President Deuba did not give consent to it on the basis of two reasons – it will annoy opposition parties and undermine the suggestion of NC leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala.
President Deuba is of the opinion that the ordinance will further irk the opposition parties who are already annoyed by the arrest of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane.
"President Deuba is of the view that the political atmosphere will further deteriorate if the opposition parties are annoyed further," the sources said, "Hence, Deuba has not given consent to the Prime Minister to issue the ordinance."
Further, Deuba does not want to move ahead by undermining the view of Dr. Shekhar Koirala, the source said.
NC leader Koirala has already made his views public that the ordinance should not be brought just to split the political parties.
On Sunday evening, there had been an elaborate conversation between Prime Minister Oli and NC President Deuba on the ordinance that will pave the way for splitting political parties.
Had Deuba given consent to it, Prime Minister Oli would have taken it forward by calling a cabinet meeting today.
After Deuba did not give consent to it stating afore-mentioned two reasons, the regular cabinet meeting scheduled for today was also postponed, the sources have said.
