Former Speaker Daman Nath Dhungana has passed away. He was 83.
Dungana, who was hospitalized one month ago, breathed his last in course of treatment at Frontline Hospital in Old Baneshwar at 2 pm today, his family sources said.
The former Speaker had been undergoing medical treatment for a liver tumor, according to his family sources.
Dhungana had won the elections of the House of Representatives from Kathmandu Constutituency-2 in 2048 BS and had become the Speaker on June 23, 1991. He served as the Speaker till 2051 BS.
He had contested the general elections from Bhaktapur Constituency-2 in 2074 BS, representing Nepali Congress. Dhungana, who contributed significantly to the country's democratic movement, was jailed time and again by the Panchayati rulers during his political career.
He is survived by his spouse, two sons and a daughter.
His last rites will be conducted tomorrow, Monday.
