The last rites for Prakriti Lamsal, whose body was brought to her home town in Bhairahawa, Nepal on Wednesday evening, has been performed.

She was cremated at Swargadwari Ghat in Bhairahawa in Rupandehi district on Thursday morning.

Prakriti, a third-year B. Tech student studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday.

The body of Prakriti was rallied around Bhairahawa before being taken to Swargadwari Ghat. Some of her college mates had participated in the funeral procession. Her grandfather Devnath Lamsal lit the pyre of Prakriti.

The KIIT University administration has claimed that Prakriti committed suicide. A high-level committee formed to investigate the death of Prakriti has been carrying probe into the case.

An abetment case has been filed against an Indian student who allegedly forced her to commit suicide through harassment and blackmail. Meanwhile, the college administration has terminated two and suspended three staffers for misbehaving Nepali students.

After Prakriti was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday afternoon, irate students started demonstrating on the college premises demanding investigation and justice for her. However, the college administration, instead of addressing their demand, intervened in their protests, thrashed and evicted them from the college.

The incident hit the headlines.  Following pressures from all quarters, including criticisms from social media and local and international media outlets, the KIIT has apologized for its mistreatment against the Nepali students and urged them to return and join academia.

However, 168 Nepali students returned home via various border points as of Wednesday evening due to fear of discrimination and mistreatment.

The Odisha government, local media, students and the Nepali Embassy had taken the initiative in resolving the situation.
