The government is set to appoint the 31st Inspector General of Nepal Police today.

Incumbent Inspector General of Police (IGP) Basanta Bahadur Kuwar is retiring tonight, prompting the Council of Ministers to make a new appointment.

With five Additional Inspectors General (AIGs) also retiring today, there are three contenders for the position of IGP.

The government will choose the IGP from among AIG Deepak Thapa, Director of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Police; AIG Sudeep Giri, Chief of the National Police Training Academy; and AIG Tek Bahadur Tamang, Chief of Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari.

They had joined the Nepal Police as Police Inspectors on September 4, 1995. Thapa was promoted to AIG two weeks before Giri and Tamang. The new IGP will remain in service until September 4, 2025, after which they will retire on the ground of a 30-year service limit.

However, if the bill to remove the 30-year limit, which is currently under consideration in Parliament, is passed, their service period could be extended.

Their work experiences
CIB Chief Thapa had previously served as the Chief of Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, and as the Chief of the Administration Department after being promoted to AIG.

During his time as the Police Inspector, Thapa served as the in-charge of Area Police Office Banepa, Area Police Office Garuda, and Rautahat.

He has also worked at Nepal Police School Sanga, Police School Dipayal, Area Police Office Maikot Rukum, Area Police Office Kattike Deurali, and the Headquarters Staff Branch.

After being promoted to DSP, Thapa also held command in various units, including District Police Office Khotang, Prime Minister's Security Office Baluwatar, and Police Circle Maharajganj.

As a DSP, he also served at Area Police Office Butwal, the Headquarters Personnel Administration Branch, and District Police Offices Morang, Sunsari, and Makwanpur.

After being promoted to SP, he worked at the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) in Kohalpur and Butwal, and also became the police chief of Chitwan.

He also had the opportunity to work in the Budget Branch of the Headquarters. After being promoted to SSP, he became the Chief of the Economic Administration Department and the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office. Following that, he worked at the Career Development Division and the Police National Training Academy before being promoted to DIG. Subsequently, he was posted to the Logistics Directorate and then became the police chief of Bagmati Province. After becoming an AIG within a short period, Thapa has worked in the most desirable offices.

Thapa has been the choice of every recent government, successfully securing preferred postings.

Another contender for IGP, Sudeep Giri, was posted to the Provincial Coordination Department after becoming an AIG. He was then transferred to the National Police Training Academy.

Giri has spent the longest time in the Special Bureau of the police service. Having worked in the Special Bureau, he also served as the chief of the Special Bureau after becoming a DIG.

After spending four years in the Central Special Task Force, he went on a UN mission and then returned to the Special Bureau.

After being promoted to DSP, he served as the in-charge of Police Circle, Kalimati and the task force. As an SP, he commanded Parsa district before returning to the Special Bureau. He also served as the chief of CIB and District Police Office Kailali as an SP.

After that, he became the chief of Kathmandu Police Range. After being promoted to DIG, he became the chief of the Special Bureau and also served as the chief of Koshi Province.

Having served in two different offices in two years as an AIG, he now has the opportunity to become IGP.

Another contender for IGP is Tek Bahadur Tamang. AIG Tamang is the chief of Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari. Having spent five years at the CIAA, he has worked more extensively at training centers.

As an inspector, he served as the chief of Area Police Office Phaparbari Makwanpur, Area Police Office Gajuri Dhading, then Ward Police Office Sanepa, and Ward Police Office Lainchaur.

After being promoted to DSP, he commanded District Police Offices Arghakhanchi and Khotang. As a DSP, he also has experience commanding Area Police Office Dharan and Police Circle, Kalimati.

After being promoted to SP, he worked at the District Police Office Banke, and the CIAA. After being promoted to SSP, he was assigned to Biratnagar Police Training Center before returning to the CIAA.

He also remained at the CIAA after being promoted to DIG. After being posted as the chief of the Crime Investigation Department as an AIG, he was transferred to Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari.
