Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhan has been sent to jail in the Supreme Cooperative fraud and organized crime case.
Earlier, the District Court had ordered the release of Lamichhane on a bail of Rs 10 million. However, the High Court Bench in Butwal, comprising Judges Ramesh Dhakal and Swikriti Parajuli, reversed the district court's order and issued a ruling to send him to jail for further investigation.
Similarly, the court also upheld the district court's order to send former DIG Chhabilal Joshi to jail. The Rupandehi District Court had demanded a bail of Rs 10 million from Rabi and ordered Chhabilal Joshi to be sent to jail for further investigation.
Against this decision, hearings on the petitions began from Thursday, but due to incomplete arguments, the case was scheduled for Friday. The court issued this order today.
Previously, the Rupandehi District Court had released Rabi on a bail of Rs 10 million in the Supreme Cooperative fraud case. On January 26, Judge Prahlad Kumar Yogi of the Rupandehi District Court had ordered the release of Rabi on a bail of Rs 10 million.
The government attorney's office had filed a petition in the High Court, arguing that while Chhabilal was sent to jail, Rabi—facing similar charges—was released on bail, and demanded that Rabi also be sent to jail. The High Court issued the order in line with the government attorney's request.
Similarly, Rabi had filed a petition in the High Court requesting a reduction in the bail amount of Rs 10 million and to keep him under general dates. In the Supreme Cooperative case, Rabi, Chhabilal, and GB Rai, along with 42 others, have been named as defendants.
They are accused of embezzling over Rs 550 million from the cooperative. Among them, Rabi, Chhabilal, and GB Rai are specifically accused of embezzling 109 million 936 thousand rupees separately. GB Rai, however, remains at large.
