Dr Gunakar Bhatta, Executive Director of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), has resigned from his post following confirmation of his appointment as the central bank's 18th governor.
An NRB official confirmed to Nepalkhabar that Bhatta tendered his resignation.
The decision came after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba reached an agreement during talks at Baluwatar.
A recommendation committe comprising Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, former governor Bijay Nath Bhattarai and economist Bishwa Paudel, will finalize Bhatta's name among three candidates for the cabinet approval.
Earlier, a prolonged dispute between ruling coalition partners Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN (UML) over the appointment of the governor was resolved after UML Chair KP Sharma Oli conceded the post to the NC during a high-level meeting on Wednesday.
Bhatta, who holds a PhD in economics, previously served as an economic advisor to former Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat. The cabinet will formalize his appointment after the committee submits its recommendation.
