Mahesh Kumar Shrestha has been elected as the new President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), an umbrella organization of the Nepali diaspora.
A unity general convention of NRNA held in Kathmandu on Sunday elected new working committee led by Shrestha unopposed.
According to chief election commissioner senior advocate Gopal Krishna Ghimire, while Mahesh Kumar was elected as the president, Sunil Kumar Sah, Buddhi Sagar Subedi, Khagendra Neupane, Lok Prasad Dahal, Manoj Kumar Shrestha and Bishwa Deep Limbu have been elected as vice presidents.
Similarly, Junu Gurung has been elected as vice president under (woman category), Baburam Lama (General Secretary), Chintamani Sapkota, Tanka Prasad Gaire, Tilak Prasad Gaire and Devaki Khatri Gurung (woman secretary) have been elected.
Thakur Prasad Dhungana has been picked as the treasurer, Krishna Prasad Pokharel (joint treasurer), Rashmi Thapa (woman coordinator), Bhimsen Thapa (youth coordinator), Dr Balaram Shrestha (Asia Pacific Regional Coordinator), Prem Bahadur Gurung (Europe Regional Coordinator), Ramesh Shrestha (Middle East Regional Coordinator), Diluram Parajuli (North-South America Regional Coordinator), Ershad Ahmed (Oceania Regional Coordinator) have been elected.
Mim Bahadur Purja and Madhav Pokharel have been elected as Asia Pacific Regional Deputy Coordinators, Sunil Kumar Ghimire and Shree Krishna Bhattarai, (Middle East Regional Deputy Coordinator), Bishwa Raj Bastola and Nar Bahadur Tandan Chhetri (North-South America Regional Deputy Coordinator) and Pratap Rana and Ram Prasad Kandel have been elected as Oceania Regional Deputy Coordinators.
Newly elected Shrestha had lost to Dr Badri KC in the previous general elections.
The working committee led by KC did not participate in the general elections.
Similarly, Dr Upendra Mahato, Jiba Lamichhane, Kumar Pant, Ram Pratap Thapa among other former NRNA presidents who are currently in the high-level committee led by Shesh Ghale also did not turn up in the general conventions.
While Supreme Court had reinstated the dispute resolution high-level committee led by Shesh Ghale by nullifying the 10th General Convention on the one hand and legitimized the working committee led by KC on the other.
The Foreign Ministry and KC himself had filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court demanding a halt on the general convention organized by the committee led by Ghale.
However, these petitions have yet to be heard.
