England booked their place in the World Cup Round of 16 after fighting back from behind to secure a hard-fought victory against DR Congo at the Atlanta Stadium.
Skipper Harry Kane turned savior for the Three Lions, netting two crucial second-half goals to keep England's tournament alive in the ongoing World Cup co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
The African nation caught the favorites off guard early in the match, with Bryan Sipenga opening the scoring just seven minutes into the first half. DR Congo put up a resilient defensive display, maintaining their shocking 1-0 lead deep into the second half until the 74th minute.
However, England’s persistent pressure finally paid off. Despite dominating 54% of the ball possession and firing 16 shots—eight of which were on target—it took until the 75th minute for Kane to find the equalizer. The former Tottenham striker struck again in the 86th minute, breaking Congolese hearts and knocking them out of the tournament.
With his clutch performance, Kane has firmly thrown his name into the Golden Boot race. He now has 5 goals in the tournament, trailing just behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, who lead the charts with 6 goals each. Kane currently shares the 5-goal mark with Erling Haaland, while Ousmane Dembélé follows closely with 4 goals.
England will now look ahead to a massive Round of 16 showdown against co-hosts Mexico on July 6.
