A writ petition has been filed against Economist Dr Bishwo Poudel in the Supreme Court amidst preparations to appoint him as the next governor of Nepal Rastra Bank.

Advocates Pratibha Upreti and Bishal Thapa filed the writ stating that appointing a member of a political party as the governor is against the existing rule.

The writ, however, is yet to be registered.

Earlier, they had also filed a writ petition against Dr Gunakar Bhatta after the government was making preparations to appoint him as the next governor.

In the writ, the advocates have argued that appointing a member of a political party cannot become the governor as per the Section 21 of the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba had reached an agreement to put forward the name of Dr Poudel.

With the agreement, Poudel has resigned as the member of the governor recommendation committee. He submitted his resignation to Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, who is also the coordinator of the governor recommendation committee.
