Sagarmatha Sambaad: Experts stress protection of mountains

Experts from different sectors, working to mitigate climate change impacts, have stressed that it was responsibility of the global community to protect mountains, because they are major sources of livelihood.

During a panel discussion on 'Exploring nature, culture and adventure in mountains' held as part of the ongoing Sagarmatha Sambaad today, they laid emphasis that protecting mountains is essentially linked to preserving mountain ecosystem.

The mountain protection help enliven culture and tradition, wildlife, biodiversity and tourism from the high hill to lower costal area, mentioned the experts.

Country Representative for WWF, Nepal, Dr Ghan Shyam Gurung, was a keynote speaker where River Basin Manager of Oxfam, Rajan Subedi, Sagarmatha climber from Oman, Nadhira Al Harthy, Assistant Commissioner at Uganda's Ministry of Water and Environment, Maureen Anion, and Chief Executive Officer of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, Tshering Sherpa, shared their experiences and expertise on the occasion.

Mountain region covers 22 percent of the earth.

This session was organized with an objective of strengthening integrity of mountain ecosystem, identifying innovative solutions, and exploring measures to increase investment in natural capital to benefit larger population.
