German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, one of Germany’s highest civilian honors, to two individuals associated with the social organization Nepalmed for their contributions to Nepal’s healthcare sector.
Dr Silke and Arne Drews, long-time members of Nepalmed, were recognized for their efforts in initiating and improving Nepal’s healthcare system. The award was presented amidst a ceremony on May 22, 2025, during President Steinmeier’s official visit to Delitzsch in the state of Saxony.
The German President’s Office highlighted Nepalmed’s 25 years of dedicated service in strengthening Nepal’s healthcare infrastructure. The organization has been actively supporting rural hospitals and primary healthcare centers in remote areas, where access to medical services remains limited. Additionally, Nepalmed has contributed to road construction leading to hospitals, provided transportation vehicles, built staff housing, and facilitated regular training and advanced education for local healthcare workers.
Arne Drews serves as the chairman of Nepalmed, while Silke Drews manages fundraising and coordination. The couple also played a pivotal role in establishing the Nepal Respiratory Society.
Upon receiving the honor, Silke and Arne Drews expressed gratitude to all supporters, volunteers, and partners of Nepalmed in Nepal and Europe. "This prestigious award is not just a personal achievement but a recognition of the collective efforts of everyone associated with Nepalmed—volunteers, donors, and well-wishers worldwide," they said. They added that the honor serves as an inspiring motivation to continue their humanitarian journey.
Established by Dr Drews in 2002, Nepalmed’s upcoming projects include establishing a blood transfusion unit at Kirtipur Hospital, launching a screening program for latent tuberculosis in western Nepal, and supporting breast cancer screening initiatives, according to the organization.
