Twenty-five tourists have died due to high altitude sickness in the Annapurna trekking route during the fiscal year 2082/83, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) said.
According to ACAP, out of those casualties, 12 were Nepalis, nine were Indians, and one each from Japan, Mexico, Spain, and Singapore.
Fifteen people died in Mustang, eight in Manang, and one each at the Annapurna Base Camp and in Mardi Himal due to high altitude sickness. Among the Nepalis who died, four were guides and porters, the project chief Dr. Rabin Kadariya informed.
During the trekking season, five tourists lost their lives due to falls and other accidents in the same period.
An Indian tourist died during a heavy snowfall while trekking in Manang. An Australian tourist lost his life while descending after climbing Himlung Mountain in Manang. Likewise, one Nepali trekker died during a trek to the Mardi Himal, and a German citizen lost his life to altitude sickness while trekking around Khopra area in Myagdi.
It is said that deaths due to high altitude sickness usually occur in the upper regions of Mustang and Manang.
Twenty-one tourists died in the fiscal year 2080/81 and 19 tourists in the fiscal year 2081/82 due to the same cause, according to ACAP.
