The Press Council Nepal has called for safeguarding press freedom, expressing concern over recent judicial orders to remove news content and actions against journalists.
The regulatory body emphasized that complaints about media content should first be addressed through the Council, with court appeals only as a last resort.
This comes after the Kathmandu District Court unilaterally ordered Nepalkhabar and Bizmandu to take down news related to SEBON Chairman Santosh Narayan Shrestha. Media rights groups and the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) have condemned the order as unconstitutional, citing violations of press freedom and the Council’s jurisdiction.
The Press Council reiterated its commitment to balancing press freedom with accountability, urging media to adhere to ethical journalism while warning against undue interference in its regulatory role.
FNJ is collaborating with professional bodies, including the Nepal Bar Association, to challenge the court’s decision.
