The internal dispute has intensified in Nepali Congress Nawalparasi West District Committee with two rival factions flexing muscles against one another.
No sooner had NC Central Disciplinary Committee of the party expelled Bikram Khanal, Nepali Congress Lumbini Province General Secretary, for a year than the NC Nawalparasi West District Committee took action against Devendra Raj Kandel.
While Khanal is close to Dr Shekhar Koirala camp, Kandel belongs to the establishment faction led by Sher Bahadur Deuba.
Kandel and Binod Chaudhary had put a blame on Khanal for Kandel's defeat in the elections to the House of Representatives (HoR) and lodged a complaint against him at the Central Disciplinary Committee. The disciplinary committee took action based on the complaint letter without seeking due clarifications from Khanal.
Binod Chaudhary of Nepali Congress had won the elections in Nawalparasi West-1 while Kandel lost the elections to Dhruwa Pradhan of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).

A protest rally organized in Nawalparasi West on Friday.
Following the Central Disciplinary Committee’s one-year suspension of Khanal, the Nepali Congress Nawalparasi West District Committee took stricter action by expelling Kandel for five years—both were removed from the party entirely, losing even their basic memberships, he said.
The District Disciplinary committee earlier had recommended for an action against Kandel. A meeting of the NC District Working Committee on Thursday endorsed the recommendation, President Bikram Yadav said.
Leaders including Yadav have warned that the Central Disciplinary Committee should be responsible for any future consequences if the action is not withdrawn.
