CPN (UML) has begun its Politburo meeting in Chyasal, Lalitpur to discuss key documents to be presented at the upcoming Statute Convention. Among the major changes approved are a reduction in the number of party officials from 19 to 15 and the removal of the 70-year age limit as well as the two-term cap for leadership positions.
Additionally, the party has decided to abolish the Secretariat Committee, leaving only three main bodies—the Standing Committee, Politburo, and Central Committee. The 15-member executive body will now function as the Standing Committee. The upcoming Statute Convention will formalize these changes, proposing only three active central committees moving forward. The new leadership structure will consist of one Chairperson, one General Secretary, one Deputy General Secretary, five Vice-Chairpersons, and seven Secretaries.

Initially, party Vice-Chair and statute amendment committee coordinator Bishnu Paudel had proposed limiting officials to just 11, but after discussions, the number was set at 15. Similarly, while Paudel suggested a 199-member Central Committee, the leaders agreed to increase it up to 251 members. As per the party’s new structure, one-third of the Central Committee will form the Politburo, reducing its size from the current 99 members to 83. These decisions will be formally proposed at the Central Committee meeting scheduled for July 21.
