The debate over leadership change in the main opposition CPN (Maoist Center) is intensifying, of late. Recently, during the party's Standing Committee meeting, Maoist Center leader Ram Karki called for a rotational leadership system.
In an interview with Nepalkhabar's TATKALAI, Karki stated that Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is positive about stepping down from the executive role and adopting rotational leadership. Karki warned that without a fundamental "transformation" in the party's ideology and leadership, Maoist Center risks becoming a "dinosaur." He revealed that discussions with Prachanda on leadership transition have been "very positive."
Karki argued that prolonged one-person leadership stagnates the party and stifles new ideas. Prachanda, he said, is not insistent on remaining chairman indefinitely but is open to systemic reforms that allow him to focus on ideological roles.
Karki claimed that 90% of party workers celebrated when the Maoist Center quit the government, as it allowed them to reconnect with the public. He stressed the need to strengthen grassroots organizations rather than clinging to power.
Regarding new parties like Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Karki dismissed them as ideologically hollow and unsustainable. "They’ve already failed because politics without ideological clarity leads nowhere," he said.
Karki emphasized that Maoist Center must undergo a complete overhaul in leadership, ideology, and structure to survive. Though his views are currently in the minority, he believes truth ultimately prevails: "Truth always starts as a minority."
