Following the Nepali Congress Central Work Execution Committee (CWEC) meeting's decision to hold the general convention on May 11-14, General Secretary Gagan Thapa has announced that a Special General Convention will be held by mid-January.
Talking to media-persons on Friday evening after the CWEC meeting, General Secretary Thapa stated that while the convention schedule was passed by a majority, he insists on holding a special convention in accordance with the party's statute.
"The party statute isn't something you can pick and choose from whenever it suits you. A decision regarding the Special General Convention must be made," Thapa said. "There is a window of one or two days. A CWEC meeting must be summoned to call for the Special General Convention."
Thapa asserted that if the CWEC fails to reach a decision, he will proceed with organizing the special convention himself. He noted that as the General Secretary is a central authority of the party, he would act on that basis.
Contending that convention delegates have already demanded a special convention as per the statute, Thapa stated that the Central Working Committee meeting must decide accordingly. "I will not remain a silent spectator. I will follow the articles of the statute and exercise my rights to hold the Special General Convention," he said.
He added that he would wait for the CWEC for a day or two. "Whether the Central Working Committee organizes it or not will be clear within a couple of days," Thapa said, calling upon delegates across the country, "Prepare to come to Kathmandu by mid-January for the Special General Convention."
